Or did a secret inventor beat von Zeppelin and the Wright Brothers into the skies?

Fight Like a Girl - A History of Ladies Self-Defense and the Jujitsuffragettes w/ Prof. Mark P. Donnelly

describe members of the militant Suffragette movement who studied the martial art of bartitsu as a means of self defense and who served as the bodyguards for the leaders of the suffragette movement (such as Emily Pankhurst), against the police and violent anti-Suffrage mobs.

Kicking Ass in a Corset - Bartitsu for Ladies w/ Prof. Mark P. Donnelly

This workshop will be an extensive introduction to this esoteric system of
self-defense specifically focused on (and limited to) ladies and gentlewomen.  Some of the techniques employed by Victorian ladies studying this art vary from those taught to their male counterparts.  Partly this was physical but also due to the differing nature of the physical threat and the variety of accessories with which she might be equipped/encumbered. In the Ladies session, therefore, will explore: grappling, savate, canne, parasol, fan, handbag, etc.

Unlike the Bartitsu workshops at Steampunk

Edison v. Tesla - Clash of the Titans of Victorian Science

Lately, Tesla's fans have been talking a lot of smack. He's the father of alternating current! He pioneered radio, wireless and x-ray technology! He fell in love with a pigeon! Surely there is no better example of
Victorian scientist! Well, Edison's crew isn't taking that sitting down. We're talking about the man who perfected electric light bulbs! The father of the research laboratory, the motion picture and music recording! He electrocuted an elephant and a bunch of stolen house pets! Truly, he is the pinnacle of turn of
the century science! Who was the better scientist? Who did more to bring the world into the electric age? To whom is the world more indebted? Join Brian Thomas and Raymond Witte of the Imperial Amerikan Air Corps for a rollicking debate and help settle this grudge match once and for all!

A sultry, graceful, powerful French-born singer, percussionist and a fiery punk
rock guitarist from the golden days of the hardcore scene blended their diverse
talents to form Frenchy and the Punk in 2005. Imagine Django Reinhardt, Johnny
Ramone, Siouxsie Sioux and Edith Piaf jamming together at an event hosted by Tim
Burton. This is what it might sound like. The unlikely pairing has since
released 5 full-length CDs, produced a live concert DVD and performed over 500
shows together all across the U.S. and in Europe. In May 2012, Yahoo Music
called them one of the top 25 duos in the US. Their show is a carnival of two
that will take you from Paris to CBGBs and back again. A rollicking flapper folk
punk cabaret with cleverly crafted songs, pop hooks, Taiko meets Rio de Janeiro
pounding drum instrumentals and true DIY attitude.

Up Close and Personal - Fighting with the 19th C. Bowie Knife

In 1827, James Bowie carved his way into American history at the Sandbar Fight, and soon every fighting man of the South and West had to have a knife like his. The bowie knife could cut like a razor, chop like a cleaver, and stab like a sword, it was broad enough to paddle a canoe and stout enough to dig your own grave and many considered it deadlier than a pistol at close range. So great was the dread it inspired that by 1838 it was banned in several states—a ban that did little to stanch the flow of blood.

Uncivil Repairs (The 'Con Horror Stories Panel)

Have you ever had the worst happen at a Con? Your Costume fall apart? Your several hundred (or forfend, thousand) dollar prop break or crack just before you can showcase it? Get into a fight with one of your party, or did some jerk just take a swing at you? A panel on repairing costuming, props, relationships and sundry other "Horror Story" situations, as the flak hits-the-fan at these stress laden and exciting venues, these 'conventions'. Not only will we relate our tales of Woe, we will illustrate how to AVOID these particular "wrong turns" or what to do once you've stepped-in-it.

Hayley Jane

Hayley Jane is the Manic Pixie Showgirl!

She released her first album, soliloquy, in January 2008, a combination of industrial, pop punk, and melodramatic Broadway vocals. These days, she leans towards “cabaret folk” played on her ukulele and guitar, combing the sultry stylings of a torch singer with alternative angst and anger. Her second studio release, “idiot child.”, was released in November 2011.

A self-proclaimed burlesque addict, Hayley Jane delights in gorging herself on all the information she can find regarding the history of erotic entertainment. Since her burlesque debut in November 2008, she has stripped up and down the East Coast, and performed alongside 2010 Exotic World Roxi D’Lite as well as Detroit’s Lushes LaMoan, New York’s Miss Astrid and Julie Atlas Muz, and the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow. She doesn’t plan on kicking the habit anytime soon.

When not playing music or figuring out new ways to take off her clothes, Hayley Jane enjoys making video blogs and tutorials for her YouTube channel, performing as one half of The Eldritch Brothers, and making things with her hands.
